What role does Thomas Mann’s lifelong concerns play in today’s world? In what way can the Mann family’s literature and political attitudes provoke us to think about the pressing issues of our times? Migration and exile, gender issues or political engagement and democracy are only a few of the topics that are of great relevance to the present day. Im Rahmen des Jubiläumsjahres rund um Thomas Manns Der Zauberberg ist die Wiener Autorin Raphaela Edelbauer mit ihrem aktuellen Roman Die Inkommensurablen zu Gast in Lübeck. In fiebriger Erregung warten die Einwohner Wiens am 31. Juli 1914 das Verstreichen des deutschen Ultimatums ab. Unter ihnen sind drei, deren bekannte Welt zu zerfallen droht: Der Pferdeknecht Hans, der adlige Adam und die Mathematikerin Klara. Wie die Handlung von Thomas Manns Zauberberg in rund sieben Jahren auf den Kriegsausbruch zuläuft, so kulminiert Edelbauer die aufgeheizte Stimmung der Vorkriegszeit in einer einzigen Nacht.
